We live in a society where the idea of beauty is moulded by what you see and hear in the media. Women are bombarded with the next new thing to get face younger and prettier, and to get their body thinner and ‘sexier’. The beauty and diet industries have become worth millions of dollars and continue to grow exponentially.
Many would think that once a woman reaches her ‘ideal’ body or beauty, she would stop. In reality, many women have their daily body-image battle of ‘not good enough’. Even when she achieves her ‘ideal’ body weight or look, she still doesn’t feel like she’s good enough.
The battle never stops until you start to truly love and accept yourself. If women can learn to love themselves regardless of what shape, form and size they come in, how happier will we all be as human beings? If women can learn to take care of themselves better and value their inner beauty as much as they value their outer one, what amazing examples will we be setting for the next generation?
So in this article, I would like to share with you some simple tips for a more positive body image.
1. Let go of the old
You need to learn to let go of anything that no longer serves and supports you to become the best and happiest version of you. External factors such as drugs, alcohol, food, shopping etc. won’t make the real problems go away. In fact, lots of women use food as a coping mechanism, which then leads to other health issues. Seek some professional help if you struggle dealing with some past emotional baggage.
2. Remind yourself how truly beautiful and amazing you are.
No one is perfect! It is insanity to even try to pursue that standard of perfection. It is not about becoming perfect but loving all that you are, every bit of it. All those little imperfect things that you wish you could change actually make you unique. Remind yourself everyday how truly beautiful and amazing you are no matter what size, shape or form.
3. Do one act of self-love everyday
Stop waiting for other people to make you happy. You are 100% responsible for your own happiness. How you treat yourself becomes a standard for how others treat you. So if you are not willing to treat yourself with love everyday, how can you expect others to do it? Everyday, do something nice for yourself…because you deserve it!
4. Surround yourself with positive people
Choose carefully who you surround yourself with. If you are surrounded by negative and toxic people, guess what you’ll experience on a regular basis? Surround yourself with positive people who actually appreciate you, support and champion you to become a better version of you.
5. Choose what you tune-in to
Be careful of what you tune-in to, whether it is the noises from the media or your own negative voice telling you that you are not pretty/thin/young etc. enough. What you focus on most of the time will shape your reality. You have complete power to choose what you’ll listen to or focus on. Find and follow examples or stories of inspirational people who shine through their inner beauty.
6. Create a healthy and positive relationship with food
Your relationship with food will reflect the relationship you have with yourself. If you have a dysfunctional relationship with food (i.e. use food as an emotional coping mechanism), your body will suffer as a result. It is not about your weight but how much you love and look after your body. Change your relationship with food, change your lifestyle and your body will change.
7. Use your time and energy wisely
How you use your time and energy also reflects the quality of your emotions and life. For instance, do you spend your time on the couch, complaining about your situation, comparing yourself to others, putting others down etc.? Or do you spend your time exercising, nurturing your body and mind, backing yourself up, growing and putting yourself out of your comfort zone, focusing on becoming the best version of you? Make sure you use your time and energy wisely.
